in another world (2024)

in another world is a conversation between Charlie Simpson and I, delving into our journeys of navigating queer experience. I had met Charlie while working at Somerset House during my university’s winter break and realised that we were the only two queer men working there. Despite coming from very different worlds, Charlie, hailing from Lincoln, and I, from Singapore, I realised through conversations that we share many similar queer milestones, from our love of ice skating to queer allyship, first sexual encounters, STI testing, enduring hate crimes, exes, and more.

I wanted to find out more about the differences and similarities between our experiences. We revisited place that responded to universal prompts such as “where did you first kiss someone of the same gender” and “where did you get tested”, rephotographing these places together using a large-format film camera.

The series was compiled into a dos-a-dos photobook, where the images, sequenced as diptychs, come into conversation with each other to recreate the conversations I had
with Charlie.
